Prestige Costs Outstrip Exxon Valdez

The costs of the Prestige tanker disaster off northern Spain in November 2002 could be greater than those of the 1989 Exxon Valdez incident in Alaska, according to a new study. And a report from 40 Spanish scientists has warned that the effects of the spill could last for up to 10 years. Findings based on a similar casualty in 1992, suggest that it will take a decade for damage to the marine food chain to be repaired. Another study, published by the Institute of Economic Research Foundation, said cleaning up costs for the Prestige already amount to €2.5bn ($2.7bn), compared with €2bn for the Exxon Valdez, before adding in compensation payments. The institute criticised the Spanish government’s handling of the crisis and said statements that no more oil would leak from the wreck were made without any scientific basis.
